We’ve all felt lost in moments of darkness and confusion. Many people think that the whole world has lost its way. We all have been uncertain about the path ahead and longed for clarity. Life is a journey and we have been designed to engage with the creation in a variety of ways. 8 Move is a strategy for noticing how Creation is designed and our place in it. Every week we will explore an aspect of creation, starting with light, created in the beginning. These 8 Moves are drawn from the six days of creation, Sabbath, and Resurrection Sunday. We will search for the ways that Creation, in these eight days and 8 Moves resonates with our lives and our experiences.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:1, 3-4 ESV)
The first move is LIGHT. We need light. Physically it provides a way to see, and the calories that we eat. All the energy we consume can in some way be traced back to the power of the Sun. Not only do we need physical light we need the deeper truths and direction that LIGHT symbolizes. The first creative act brought forth light. The light was separated from darkness. This highlights light as a foundational element of creation and represents the truth and order given to the world.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5 ESV)
The light of Christ shines in the darkness. Darkness cannot overpower it. Light is not only physical but symbolically spiritual, revealing truth and guiding us toward an understanding of reality.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105 ESV)
God’s Word like a light, guides our steps and illuminates the path of truth. Scripture can show us the path, giving us clarity and direction. Life is filled with uncertainties. God provides light through scripture and the presence of Christ. We need the light to reveal the truth and show our way forward. Exploring the themes of 8 Moves can anchor us to the reality of Creation.
Take five minutes each morning to read a passage from the Bible or another source of truth. Ask God to illuminate the areas of your life with that truth. Start a journal and write down insights or directions being revealed to you.
Reflect and write about a time when you felt in the dark. Were you able to find light through Scripture, prayer, or another person? How can you seek that light more intentionally this week?
