“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14).
Remember a time when you looked over the city and saw it as a bright and beautiful sight for everyone to see? It’s so much more obvious when you look up at the lights on the hill. The lights were visible from miles away. In the same way, they pierced the darkness, we are called to be a light in a world shadowed by confusion and fears.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’” (John 8:12 ESV).
Here we come to the reason I emphasize the literal and figurative use of these words — the words of Creation in 8 moves. Jesus talks about light saying, “You are, He is — the light.” The meaning behind this symbolic language is that, just as he is a guide to those in darkness, so are his followers, as we do what he does. That’s a serious call, be like Jesus.
Jesus’ everyday language points to objects like light, water, and land because they are central and universal word pictures. They appeal to very basic aspects of our life. When we see these object lessons, we can relate to His call on our lives. These word pictures are easily recalled and help us to participate in sacred Creation moments.
“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5 ESV).
This declaration is both a responsibility and a promise. As followers of Christ, we are given the light of His life, a light that cannot be extinguished by any darkness. Jesus Himself is the light of the world, offering us the light of life so we never have to walk in darkness. These scriptures remind us that our light is not self-generated; it comes from Christ, and it is meant to be shared with others.
“This little light of mine”? You are more than “this little light;” you and your community are a beacon on a hill. Take some time with your journal in prayer today reflecting on the light of Christ in you and your loved ones. Embrace your witness as you shine boldly. Is there someone you can share the light with today? Pray that doors or windows will be opened to let the light in.
Movement matters.
