“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2).
Flowing with Grace: Sometimes we are frustrated by our attempts to control the results of our actions. Like water slipping through our hands–slipping through our fingers as we squeeze. Do you remember the last time you sat next to a creek, stream, or river? the water flowed, with grace around every log or stone. It meandered naturally as gravity the water flows around every obstacle. Take time to think about how the grace of God flows through our lives.
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” (John 7:38 ESV).
To those who believe, Jesus promised living water, a flow of grace, and love that would become a conduit of new life in the community. Like the flow of water, the Spirit fills us with grace that overflows into every aspect of life.
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price” (Isaiah 55:1 ESV).
Isaiah describes salvation as a place where our wants and desires are fulfilled by the grace of God, taking care of his people. Grace is free and abundant, not earned, only received. As we accept this, we open ourselves to the spiritual refreshment that only God provides.
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High” (Psalm 46:4 ESV).
The Psalmist echoes the prophecy of Isaiah saying that there is a river in the city of God that always flows This river is the unceasing grace of God. It brings peace and joy to the people. Because of this, we can experience the joy that comes from being with Him.
So, like water, surrender to the reality of God’s direction. As water flows around obstacles, God’s grace helps us navigate the challenges of life. Don’t resist this flow. Don’t try to fix or control your situation by your own strength. Release and relax, let gravity lead you downstream. Grace transforms us and blesses those around us.
Try this — The next time you notice a creek, stream, or river, look at how easily and naturally the water flows around every obstacle. Could living in grace be like that? Trust the flow and direction of your life, yielding may be a spiritual practice of discernment. Maneuver as necessary, small adjustments, trusting what the river has in store.
Journal this — Identify one area where you feel stuck or are trying too hard. Pray and write to God for help in releasing it into His hands. Allow His grace to flow through; take time to think about how that grace flows through our lives. Are you holding on too tightly to some things in life? Prayerfully invite God’s grace to flow freely. Write your thoughts and reflections about the movement of water today.
Move and flow in the Spirit.
