“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” (John 7:37-39 ESV)
Jesus promises that if you have needs, he will fulfill them. The promise, not just from Him but also from the Hebrew scriptures. The heart of believers will become a fountain, a rushing river, as the Spirit indwells and empowers them.
Isaiah 58:11 (ESV): “And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”
The Spirit of God will become a Counselor to the followers of Christ even when things are difficult, like in a draught or famine. The Spirit will renew your strength. Harkening back to the Garden of Eden, these promises will be fulfilled as an eternal Paradise.
Jeremiah 2:13 (ESV): “For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.”
Jeremiah warns that the people of God must be obedient, trusting in their God. If not, it will be like a people unprepared for the coming water shortage.
Revelation 22:1 (ESV): “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.”
The Apostle John, in the book of Revelation spoke of what he saw in a supernatural vision of heaven. These water symbols portray and predict a powerful experience of God’s care, pushing us into heaven.
Try this — Review what you know about water, its refreshment, renewal, and provision physically, is a picture of great spiritual truths.
Journal this — How has the spirit counseled and fulfilled the promises of God for you? What can you do to let the life of God bubble over in you?
Bubbling over,
