The role of the prophet and apostle is to remind God’s people of the promises found long before their fulfillment in Christ. Notice the symbolism and metaphor that draws us to find truth in our experience with something as fundamental as water.
Isaiah 44:3 ESV – “For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
In Isaiah’s scroll this water is poured out by God. It is a reminder of physical refreshment and symbolizes physical spiritual renewal. We pour water every day, into and about of a variety of containers. Water transforms dry and barren land into fertile and lush. So too, the Spirit brings transformation in our lives. The word picture of water pouring out signifies a divine promise of revitalization and growth. This reflects God’s presence profoundly changing us.
John 4:14 ESV – “But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Jesus offers a water that quenches spiritual thirst. This living water is a metaphor for the power of Christ in our lives. He speaks to the deep change we desire and when we accept His invitation to receive this refreshment it leads us to a new kind of life, a life overflowing with vitality.
Zechariah 14:8 ESV – “On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.”
This prophecy about waters flowing from Jerusalem, calls us to realize the source of Spiritual refreshing life. It’s the work of God in Jerusalem. From there is a continual, sustaining flow of provision. This picture encourages us to connect with the power of God’s Spirit, bringing life continually.
