These passages remind us of the story of Abraham, whose children waited hundreds of years before they received their promised inheritance. The land represents the strength found in belonging to a place and finding purpose in God’s timing.
Deuteronomy 6:10-11 ESV: “When the Lord your God brings you into the land… with great and good cities that you did not build.”
Our journey toward spiritual maturity brings us to a place of abundance. Abundance we did nothing to deserve. Israel inherited lands and cities that God already prepared for them. We have to admit that we have received blessings far beyond what we ask for or deserve. All that we have received challenges us to trust in God’s provision. Because of what God has done in the past, we can trust His faithfulness for our future.
Numbers 14:8 ESV: “If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.”
The covenantal If/then statement signifies the faithfulness of a promise. A land overflowing with milk and honey is symbolic of the abundance God wants for His people. If we trust—believing that God’s best is ready for His children. Like the Israelites on the other side of the border, we can face what’s before us with confidence in God’s provision. An old name for God was Providence, and this is why. He offers the land, and by faith, we step forward to claim the inheritance.
Hebrews 11:9 ESV: “By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob.”
The Father of the Faith, Abraham, was called by God to travel into a place of uncertainty. The Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were sojourners in the land God promised, without fully realizing the promise. Their story stands as a reminder that claiming the promises requires patience and persistence. When we feel like strangers in the land, the promise still stands. Eyes of faith can see what is unseen. Wait and trust for the day of its completion.
Practice: Reflect on the promises God has made to you. Are there steps of faith you need to take to claim your ground? How can you actively walk into the places prepared for you?
Journaling Prompt: Write about a time when God called you. How have you stepped out in faith? Write about a time the outcome was uncertain. How did He provide? Into what place are you being invited?
Crossing over together,
