“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15 ESV).
Genesis says that from the beginning, God gave humanity the responsibility to take care of the earth. We all want to have work that matters — meaningful work, and Adam’s role in the garden was, among other things, to cultivate and care for it.
“My Father is working until now, and I am working” (John 5:17 ESV).
Work is a divine calling and part of our design. As God ordered creation and cared for the world, we also have the opportunity to follow His purpose and example. Jesus is also involved in carrying out His Father’s will, and followers of Christ are invited into His work. Our responsibility is to see to it that our effort aligns with God’s eternal plan and purpose.
8 Moves Practice: Consider how the theme of work connects with you. Write down thoughts that come to mind and ask God for wisdom in applying this truth. What challenges are you facing in your work? Try to turn challenges into opportunities for growth by seeking guidance for your next steps.
