A tree planted by a nourishing stream pictures water as a source of life. The land that rise out of the waters of Genesis 1 has now become the biome for literal and spiritual refreshment. The plants and trees are a picture of a firm foundation that promotes life. A resource to the other living things around it.
“They are like trees planted by streams of water, that yield their fruit in its season.” (Psalm 1:3 ESV)
The image of water, land, and plant life coordinating together, picture spiritual truth about our relationship to our environment and God. Physical and spiritual nourishment are received through these profound connections. The Psalmist emphasizes the importance of being rooted in the living water of Christ, causing us to bear fruit in season.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
There is a resilience that comes from trusting in the Lord. Roots that run deep into the reality of His truth can withstand struggles without fear. When, like these trees, we draw nourishment from a constant water source, we are connected to the Word of God and its promises.
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6-7)
In Colossians, Paul encourages us to walk in Christ, being established in the faith. Our ongoing commitment reflects a life where strength is drawn from God in the same way roots are the conduit of water and nutrients for trees. Seek nourishment from God’s Word.
Practice: Take time today to read and meditate on Scripture. Consider John 15:1-5, which focuses on drawing life from Jesus, our true vine.
Journaling Prompt: Write about a time you felt fruitful in your faith. What contributed to that growth, and how can you experience that in your life again?
Remember, your roots lead to fruits. Connect to the source and watch God cultivate your heart. Consistency leads to fruitfulness in every season. As you are grounded in God, your faith will be nurtured.
Lord, find us fruitful,
