Sometimes we may feel trapped by our work, disliking the struggle, the effort, and the time it takes to get things done. When it’s quitting time, are you relieved? Perhaps you’ve heard of shifting your mindset or your paradigm, how does that work? Simon Sinek famously said, in his two books on purpose, “Find your why.” Do you have a reason for your work? For whom are you working? The wise writer of Proverbs gives us a key principle about our work.
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established” (Proverbs 16:3 ESV).
There is something critical about being on purpose with our work. When we have the right direction and vision for our work, a renewed confidence and sense of significance is the result.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23 ESV).
When our work has a greater purpose in following the Lord, there is an energy that flows with each step, with each objective, and with every goal. In our lives, we can lose sight of the purpose behind our work but Colossians 3:23 reminds us to work heartily — that is, with our whole heart. A shift in perspective transforms our mindset, giving us meaning. This kind of commitment gives clarity assuring us our work serves a greater purpose in God’s design.
Reflection: What does it mean to “work heartily”? How can you commit your work more fully to the Lord? What goals do you have that connect to God’s purpose for you?
Action: Commit an area of your life fully to the Lord. Write down goals and pray over them.
Remember: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” (Colossians 3:23 ESV)
