Throughout this series, we will talk about stability. In trying times, busy times, and times of uncertainty, it is good to find a place of stability. Perhaps this is home, family, a good job, or an important faithful relationship. Life can be chaotic and uncertain, but understanding the nature of reality can be a foundation for the maturity necessary to get through.
Psalm 40:2 ESV – “He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.”
Have you ever felt in a place where there was no way to get out without some help? When that helper lifts you up and out of your helpless situation, you will be thankful.
I think of the Hebrew prophet Jeremiah stuck in the mud, finally being lifted up and out of the pit. Being set on a rock represents the transition from instability to certainty. God is able to provide a way of escape in the midst of your hard times. Like a rock, a firm foundation, a solid base, God offers His support that will certainly be secure. As we navigate the land before us, this is what we need.
Matthew 7:24-25 ESV – “Everyone who hears these words of mine… will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Jesus also talked about the security of a house built on a rock. We want our lives to be grounded in His faithfulness and the wisdom of His teachings. The storms will come, a solidly built house is a house prepared for the most difficult times. Build your life to withstand the storms, full of resilience that comes from listening to His words and trusting in Him.
Isaiah 28:16 ESV – “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation… a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation.”
Isaiah heard God declare that He is the cornerstone, the sure standard from which the rest of the foundation is laid. The cornerstone is reliable, a place from which the next moves are made. If you want peace during difficulties, measure out your steps from the place where you can be sure you are anchored.
